T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas, better known as Yoshi, is a Yoshi who is close friends with Mario and Luigi. He joins the heroes in their hunt for the Chaos Emeralds at Mario's request.
Biography[]
Appearance[]
Yoshi is a green dinosaur with a white underbelly, a large round nose, a row of orange spines along his head, orange boots, and a shell-shaped saddle on his back.
History[]
Yoshi was born as one of the seven Star Children.
Yoshi's peaceful life on Dinosaur Land was disrupted by the arrival of Bowser and the Koopalings, who conquered the land and trapped Yoshi and his friends inside magical eggs. Yoshi set out to rescue them, but ended up being trapped himself, with his egg being hidden in a field on Yoshi's Island. Mario and Luigi stumble upon his egg during their search for Princess Peach and free him. Upon his release, Yoshi informed the brothers of how Bowser captured his friends. The three teamed up to rescue Yoshi's friends and Princess Peach. After successfully defeating Bowser and his troops, the three return back to Yoshi's home along with the princess and Yoshi's friends to celebrate their victory.
Turbo Mecha Sonic Saga[]
Personality[]
Yoshi has a very similar personality to Mario. Yoshi is a friendly individual who always lends a helping hand to those in need. He could be considered a hero and has helped his friends, defeated the evil King Bowser Koopa, and saved his island more than once, including the Mushroom Kingdom and save Princess Peach. Once Yoshi takes on a task, he does not give up until he completes it. Yoshi never backs down at defending his homeland and friends. He is also very courageous, allowing the green dinosaur to stand and fight enemies much larger than himself.
In Super Mario Bros. Z, he is also very brave; in Episode 3, Yoshi stood up to Mecha Sonic attempting to protect the Red Chaos Emerald. Like Mario, Yoshi is known by several villains that he and Mario fought, but he is also heard of by other villains. Like Mario, Yoshi is feared by most of them.
Fighting Style[]
In battles, Yoshi's main abilities are his high speed, combos and items. Yoshi possibly has the same speed as Sonic and Shadow (and Cape Mario). In Episode 7, Yoshi ran at full speed to get away along with heroes from the Minus World and Mecha Sonic (while carrying mario). Because of that, Yoshi is the second Speed-type character of the series (unlike Sonic, he possesses more stamina).
In battles, similar to Sonic, Yoshi always kicks up enemies, and he makes use of his long tongue which he latches onto enemies to either slam them against walls, the ground, etc. and pull them in to deal more blows, but has yet to use his fists. However, his powerful attack is charging at his foes (powerfully shown in Episode 8). Like Shadow, Yoshi is always the savior in battles. In Episode 6, Yoshi saves Luigi from Axem Pink and overwhelms the Koopa Bros. as they attempted to win a few hits off Luigi. Yoshi's new moves has been shown in Super Mario Bros. Z series, such as Egg Shield and "Yoshi Whirl". In Episode 3, Yoshi starts to shield himself into an egg large enough for him. It seemed to be more solid. It could possibly roll like Sonic or Shadow, for in the Smash Bros. series (from Melee onward), he possesses an ability where he turns into an egg and rolls around the arena, slamming opponents like bowling pins. It is unknown if it can protect his allies. In Episode 5 and 6, he flutter jumps on his enemies, delivering mutiple kicks. In Episode 8, Yoshi starts spinning at enemies by sticking his tongue on Tanooki Luigi's Statue Form.
Yoshi was known to be able to use power-ups of the Mushroom World, as well in the Mushroom Universe. In the series, Yoshi has not been transformed yet but still is capable to handle enemies that the powered-up heroes face (like in Episode 8). However, he will transform into his powerful form, Super Yoshi, with the help of the Seven Star Spirits and fights against Metallix with the heroes in their ultimate forms too, as hinted by the intro.
Powers and Abilities[]
Like the rest of his species, Yoshi has a long sticky tongue that he uses to eat just about anything, including things much larger than himself. He can transform the enemies and any other objects he eats into eggs, which he can use as a projectile.
Yoshi has the ability to flutter-jump, which allows him to cover a great amount of horizontal distance. He is also proficient with the ground-pound.
Transformations[]
Super Yoshi[]
Super Yoshi is a form that Yoshi achieves through the assistance of the Star Spirits. In this form, his skin takes on a golden color and sprouts a pair of wings. The abilities this form grants is unknown, as it has only appeared in the series' opening animation, but it is presumed to be Yoshi's most powerful form.
Techniques[]
- Ground Pound - Considered to be Yoshi's most used attack, Yoshi slams his rear end into his opponent right underneath him. This attack can only be used in midair.
- Egg Shield - Yoshi's only defensive move, also called the "Egg Cocoon". When used, Yoshi encases himself inside a large egg which makes him both highly impervious to attacks, but can also be used to gain distances quickly, The eggshell is shown to be strong enough to stop machine gun bullets from Turbo Mecha Sonic However, it isn't invincible; enough damage could break the shell open, leaving Yoshi exposed.
- Flutter Jump - If the opponent is lower than Yoshi, he rapidly swings his feet around, hitting them multiple times. This attack is very similar to Mario's Spin Attack, except for the fact that Yoshi uses his feet rather than his arms. While outside of battle, this move can be used to gain more height when jumping to a platform above him. An example of this is seen in The New Threat.
- Shoulder Tackle - This attack is very simple; Yoshi simply tackles the enemy with his shoulders.
- Shoulder Charge - This move is similar to the Shoulder Tackle, but his shoulder have a blue aura; it can pushes back a group of enemies.
- Egg Throw - Yoshi ejects an egg and throws it at the opponent. This move also has a chance of stunning them.
- Return To Sender - Yoshi uses this move to redirect an enemy's attack back at them. First, Yoshi grips his tongue around a projectile (A missile, a Koopa shell, etc), holds it in his mouth, and fires it back at the enemy. An example of this is when Mecha Sonic fired a missile, Yoshi grabbed the missile with his tongue, held it in his mouth, and spat the missile back at the former.
- Egg Prison - This attack is extremely useful, but only if used in the right situation. When used, Yoshi imprisons his opponent in a egg. He does this by eating his opponent and then ejecting him out inside of an egg. However, more powerful opponents (such as Mecha Sonic) can break free.

Trivia[]
- Yoshi is the only protagonist to not have his own title-card at the beginning of the series' intro. However this omission was later rectified in the 2015 reboot's intro.
- In episodes 3-5, Yoshi's sprite is from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Starting with episode 6, his sprite was changed to his appearance from Yoshi's Island DS. This change is carried over into the reboot.
- In SMBZ, Yoshi's backstory appears to be more defined compared to the ambiguity found in the Mario franchise. In Yoshi's Island DS, the ending hints at a connection between a newly-hatched Baby Yoshi and the Yoshi later rescued by the grown-up Mario Bros. in Super Mario World. However, Nintendo has never officially confirmed whether this is the same Yoshi. In SMBZ, the clarification comes with the introduction of the Yoshi Chief, who is revealed to be the same Yoshi that assisted the Mario Bros. in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. This revelation establishes two separate prominent green Yoshi characters within the SMBZ canon. It's important to note that SMBZ is a fan-made creation and not officially endorsed by Nintendo, so it's considered unofficial media and, therefore, non-canon to the Mario series. However, within the context of SMBZ, it can be considered canon to its own storyline and universe.
