Genesis of Metallix is the third episode in the reboot of Super Mario Bros. Z, and the third of the Metallix Saga. The title was revealed by Mark Haynes on March 12, 2020. Mark Haynes later confirmed to be writing the screenplay on September 14, 2022 On September 30, 2022, he announced that production on the episode had begun. On January 28, 2023, following the unbanning of his Twitter account, Haynes revealed the first scene of the episode. On September 24, Haynes posted the second scene within a Discord server.

Synopsis

While caring for Yoshi, who was brutally injured at the hands of Metallix, Sonic recounts the story of his homeworld and how he, Shadow and Metallix arrived at the Mushroom Kingdom. Meanwhile, Bowser and Eggman plot to build a new airship fleet.

Plot

Bowser's minions, including Koopa Troopas, Dark Koopas, Hammer Bros., Clubbas, and Koopatrols, are working on his airship fleet. Some are actually working, while a Clubba is snoring and a Koopa Troopa and a Koopatrol are chatting. A Hammer Bro is about to hammer a nail into one of the airships, but misses the nail and hits his hand instead, causing him to comically scream in pain and the hand to turn red and swell up. A Koopa Troopa is seen losing control of his jackhammer with his sunglasses falling off. A Hammer Bro is painting one of the airships green and accidentally gets green paint on a Koopatrol, enraging him. Up above on one of the catwalks, a Clubba is carrying a long piece of plywood with a Koopatrol to his left and one to his right. A Dark Koopa approaches the Clubba and whistles. The Clubba turns to face him, but his long piece of plywood knocks both the Koopatrols off the catwalk. A Hammer Bro is seen taking inventory with a clipboard when he sees one of the Koopatrols fall to the floor. The other lands in a Bill Blaster, which then launches him and the Hammer Bro into a stack of crates, releasing a horde of Bob-ombs. A Koopa Troopa and a pair of Hammer Bros notice this and start running around in circles.

Bowser, Bowser Jr. and Dr. Eggman are walking down the halls of Bowser's Castle towards the chaos. Bowser assures Eggman that his engineers are the best and brightest in the entire kingdom, and that they can build anything Eggman can come up with, only to see a Dark Koopa covered in flames being chased by Bob-ombs, while another Koopatrol in the background is being chased by increasing amounts of Bob-ombs, the Koopa Troopa still riding uncontrollably all over the castle on a jackhammer, the airships on fire, the catwalks in shambles and a Clubba sleeping on the job. Bowser Jr. bursts out into laughter. An enraged Bowser roars, but then remembers his blood pressure and calms down. He asks Eggman what he wanted to show him, and Eggman has Bowser and Bowser Jr. Follow him into another room, where he shows them his latest Egg Carrier model.

Meanwhile, at the castle, Mario and friends are still healing up Yoshi. The latter, who was brutally injured, is seen resting.

Differences from the original 

Overview

• This episode expands upon the first act of the original series' fourth episode.
  • The episode will also detail how Sonic knows of Mario during Fierce Battle Between Fierce Rivals. This was never addressed in the original series.
• A new scene showing the alliance between Bowser and Eggman overseeing the Koopa Troop at work will open the episode.
  • A plan depicting a new Egg Carrier is shown, foreshadowing the Omega Doomship.
• The Koopa Bros. will not be appearing in this episode. Instead they will make their first appearance in Episode 4.
• Amy may be shown doing a tarot reading during the events of this episode.
• Silver, Gemerl, Orbot and Cubot appear during the flashback.

Trivia

• It is possible that this episode is named after Genesis of the Daleks, a serial episode from the UK science fiction series Doctor Who.
  • Both episodes feature an origin story of a sort for the titular villains, namely Metal Sonic's transformation into Metallix, and the creation of the Daleks.
  • Metallix shares his name with the Metal Sonic robots from Sonic the Comic published by Fleetway Editions. The UK-based authors of the comic have confirmed that these Metallix robots were in part based on the Daleks.
• Tails is depicted meeting Metal Sonic alongside Sonic, despite not appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog CD.
  • Haynes explained that this decision is a nod to the Sonic the Hedgehog OVA, where Sonic and Tails encounter Metal Sonic together.
