"Baldy McNosehair"? How unflattering... I am known formally as... Doctor Ivo Robotnik! The greatest scientific genius in the world! But call me Eggman.

Doctor Eggman, The New Threat

Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik is a mad scientist with an IQ of 300. He is the arch-nemesis of Sonic the Hedgehog, former leader of the "Eggman Empire", and an antagonist of Super Mario Bros. Z. Under unknown circumstances, Eggman finds himself under the employ of Bowser, providing him advanced with technology to aid him in his conquest, such as the Omega Doomship and Mecha Mario.

Biography[]

Dr. Eggman is a twisted genius who uses his brilliant intellect for his own selfish gain. He wants to rule a world of robots, and will do whatever it takes to achieve this dream. His dangerous ambition is what ultimately put him at odds with Sonic the Hedgehog during their early days, and the two have been enemies ever since.

Appearance[]

Dr. Eggman is a bald, tall rotund man with long, thin, almost disproportionate arms and legs, and a bushy brown mustache. He wears tinted glasses and gray goggles for headwear. He wears a red coat sporting two square metal buttons on both sides of the chest in gold. The buttons have white straps that run across the coat's sides to identical buttons on the back. The coat also has silver, zipper-like linings down the back, arms, and front, yellow cuffs, and two extensions on the front with large silver buttons. Eggman also wears white, cuffless gloves on his hands and a pair of black pants with matching boots. The boots have circular plates on both sides of the ankles and three square ones riding up the shin.

Personality[]

Dr. Eggman is short-tempered, raucous, pompous, and cruel evil genius who is constantly trying to take over the world, with his motivation being self-entitlement. He tends to build machines in his image to fuel his own massive ego, arrogance, and narcissism. He even goes as far as to declare himself "the greatest scientific genius of the world."

However, as shown during his talk with Bowser in The New Threat, Eggman has demonstrated that he can forgo his pride and join forces with others if he is willing to reap part of the benefits. He is also incredibly persuasive in getting people on his side. He was able to gain Bowser's attention with the Red Chaos Emerald and promised him advanced technology to aid him in his endeavors.

History[]

Metallix Saga[]

2-24

Eggman made his first appearance inside Bowser's Castle, questioning Bowser how things had transpired in his recent battle with Mario. The Koopa King interjected, stating that it was not his business, insulting him before asking asking why he entered his throne room without permission. The Doctor corrected him, insisting that Bowser refers to him as Eggman. However, Bowser brushed off his correction before asking again why he had entered his throne room. Eggman explained that he had come to propose an alliance. Bowser, seeming unimpressed, asked why he should consider forming this alliance. The Doctor then presented Bowser with the Red Chaos Emerald, explaining that it is a part of a set of seven miracle gems that originate from his home dimension. Having piqued his interest, Bowser tells Eggman to explain to him more about the Chaos Emeralds, to which Eggman obliges.

2-33

Eggman presents his Chaos Emerald to Bowser.

After hearing his explanation of the Chaos Emeralds, Bowser questioned what he'd get out of their partnership. Eggman offered his scientific genius to create machines and weaponry to assist in his conquest of the Mushroom Kingdom. Pleased with his answer, Bowser agreed to join Eggman's proposed alliance and then called the Koopa Bros. to be shown Eggman's Emerald so that they could find the rest of them.

Powers and Abilities[]

Eggman's capabilities at the time are unknown. However, given that he hails himself as "the greatest scientific genius of the world," Eggman is an advanced engineer and scientist. Eggman has an IQ of 300 and is the creator of many machines and battlecrafts. These machines include Metal Sonic and the Sonic robots he merged with to become Metallix. Throughout his history of battling Sonic, Eggman has created numerous other devices, robots, and weapons of mass destruction. Under the employ of Bowser, Eggman even created both the Omega Doomship and Mecha Mario to aid him and his army.

Relationships[]

Allies[]

Bowser[]

Bowser tends to forget his name, often referring to him as something of an egg product. Their relationship started as uneasy given that Bowser snapped at and subsequently insulted Eggman for questioning his recent beating from Mario. Regardless, Eggman continued to address Bowser with respect and even managed to persuade into forging an alliance through the promise of gaining the Chaos Emeralds, destroying Mario and his allies, and taking over the Mushroom Kingdom. Afterward, Bowser seemed to have warmed up to Eggman and agreed to join forces.

Enemies[]

Sonic[]

Sonic and Eggman are nothing short of bitter archenemies, both having fought each other over the years. Sonic has constantly thwarted the doctor's evil plans for world domination, and Eggman has always made plans that disturb the world's peace. Their relation is akin to that of the antagonistic relationship between Mario and Bowser. Eggman hates Sonic and everything about him and will stop at nothing until he rids himself of Sonic's existence.

Shadow[]

Although they have worked together in the past, Eggman and Shadow are enemies. Although not to the same extent of his hatred for Sonic, Eggman views Shadow as a hindrance to his plans of world conquest. Likewise, Shadow views Eggman as nothing more than a nuisance.

Trivia[]

  • In SMBZ, Eggman serves as an analogue to Dr. Gero from the Dragon Ball series.
  • In the original series, Eggman's identity was never revealed, with Mark Haynes intending to reveal it during either Episode 9 or the unreleased Episode 10. In the new series, his identity is revealed on his first appearance in Episode 2.
    • Haynes explained that he felt that it was painfully obvious who the mystery scientist was in the original, despite appearing as late as episode 7. He also explained that he wanted to explore the dynamics between Bowser and Eggman's uneasy alliance.[1]
  • Bowser's misnaming of "Baldy McNosehair" is derived from Sonic Colors and Sonic Lost World, where Sonic calls the doctor by the name.
    • However in the preview, Bowser referred to him as "Baldy Nosehair" rather than "Baldy McNosehair".
