–Basilisx, The Great Doomship Offensive |
Captain Basilisx is the captain of Bowser's Koopa Guard stationed on the Omega Doomship and is a minor antagonist in Super Mario Bros. Z
Biography[]
History[]
Little is known about Basilisx's background, other than that he was close friends with a koopa stationed in Bowser's Castle in Dinosaur Land. After Mario had supposedly killed his friend, Basilisx swore to avenge him and the other members of the Koopa Troop that fell to the plumber. Sometime after Dr. Eggman joined forces with Bowser, Basilisx underwent a drastic change, being the product of a super-soldier project conducted by the doctor.
Mecha Sonic Saga[]
Having been stationed as a part of the Omega Doomship's crew, Basilisx was ordered by Bowser to open fire on the Sky Pop using the ship's Doom Kanon. However, Mario manages to avoid the cannon's blasts and maneuvers the Sky-Pop outside of its range. After failing to shoot the Sky-Pop down, Basilisx is ordered to go to the deck and prepare to defend the Doomship.
After the heroes had decimated much of the Doomship's crew, Basilisx arrived and struck Mario just as he was about to finish off the remaining Koopatrols in the hangar. Basilisx orders his troops to stand down, stating that he would deal with the heroes himself. Using his petrifying glare, Basilisx turns Luigi, Yoshi, and Sonic to stone and challenges Mario to a duel. He proclaims that he'll avenge his best friend and all of the other members of the Koopa Troop that fell at Mario's hands before engaging him.
Although Basilisx managed to hold his own against Mario, he quickly found himself overwhelmed by the plumber. But he turned the tides of the battle by taking ahold of the petrified Luigi, using him as a bludgeoning weapon. Though Mario attempted to retaliate, he hesitated as Basilisx used Luigi as a shield, creating the opening the Captain needed to defeat Mario. Basilisx gloated over his victory over Mario and prepared to finish him off. However, by utilizing the Tanooki Suit's powers, Luigi freed himself from his petrification and took Basilisx by surprise with a blow from his hammer. Having deduced how Luigi freed himself, Basilisx ordered his remaining troops to attack the brothers.
Personality[]
Basilisx is cold, ruthless, and bloodthirsty. He is more than willing to use underhanded tactics to achieve victory. Despite this, he has shown a small degree of honor, as he refused to use his infamous petrification stare against the plumber despite freely admitting he could easily have done so and then used his claws to shred apart his petrified body, although it should be noted he mostly chose this route so he could fully satiate his desire for vengeance against the plumber. He has a strong vendetta against Mario, who he accused of murdering his best friend along with countless members of the Koopa Troop. He also seems to have a bit of a temper, as shown when he petrified one of his own men after they had difficulty activating the Doom Kanon.
Powers and Abilities[]
Basilisx possesses impressive strength and agility, being able to keep pace with Mario and match his strength during their duel. But his most notable abilities are his petrifying glare, which allows him to turn those he looks at to stone, and his retractable claws. It is believed that both of these abilities are the product of Dr. Eggman's experimentation. Like the rest of his fellow Koopas, he is also able to retract into his shell for defensive and offensive purposes.
Techniques[]
- Bloody High Claw - Based on Vega's special attack of the same name from Street Fighter IV, Basilisx lunges at an opponent in quick succession while rising higher with each subsequent slash from his claws.

Trivia[]
- Basilisx's name is a play on the mythological beast known as the Basilisk. His ability to petrify enemies by staring at them is also a reference to the Basilisk's abilities.
- Basilisx holds many similarities to Wolverine of the X-Men series, such as being the result of a "super soldier" experiment, having 3 claws per hand that can be drawn out and retracted, and his ruthless nature.
- Basilisx's poses resemble the Koopa Bros..
- Basilisx's voice clips were largely derived from Imperfect Cell's from the Dragon Ball Budokai games.
- In addition, Basilisx's ability to paralyze his foes by staring at them resembles the character General Blue and in particular his ability Psychic Eyes. Coincidentally, both Basilisx and General Blue were either explicitly stated or otherwise strongly implied to have gotten the ability from "enhancements" by the organization they served (the Koopa Troop for Basilisx, the Red Ribbon Army for Blue, at least in the English dub), though the main difference is that Blue, as implied by the name of the technique, merely used psychokinesis to paralyze the opponent, while Basilisx outright petrified them by turning them to stone. In addition, Basilisx explicitly foregoes using his petrification stare ability against Mario in order to fully satiate his revenge against Mario, unlike Blue, who (albeit being forced to) used his psychic eyes ability against Goku twice.
- In the past, Haynes stated that he did not wish to include Basilisx in the series reboot, due to being shoe-horned with no backstory or buildup. However he has since reconsidered and currently plans on reintroducing him in the Smithy Saga. [1]
- In episode 8, Bowser mentioned that beefing Basilisx up required "one tiny little needle" suggesting that Basilisx was once a regular Koopatrol who has been injected.
- The idea behind Basilisx's character was provided by the same unnamed fan who wrote the story for episode 7 and assisted in writing dialogue for episode 8.[2]
- The Koopa that Captain Basilisx claimed to be his best friend does not exist in Super Mario World. As he claims that he was Koopa #3 of Room 2 in Bowser's Castle in Dinosaur Land, referring to the third Koopa Troopa encountered in the second room of the "Front Door" level in Super Mario World. However there are spikes, rather than lava, along the bottom of this area, among other inconsistencies with how that particular Koopa Troopa could have possibly died.
- Commenting on this inconsistency, Haynes stated that he made an uninformed guess and was unable to verify it due to how scarce Super Mario World play-throughs were on the internet at the time. [3]
