Brawl on a Vanishing Island is the sixth episode of Super Mario Bros. Z. Released on May 27, 2007, this episode picks up where the previous one left off.

Synopsis[]

The Heroes, the Koopa Bros., and the Axem rangers duke it out for control of the Chaos Emeralds, but are interupted by Mecha Sonic who wipes out both the Koopa Bros and The Axem Rangers pretty easily using four chaos Emeralds. The Heroes don't do much better than them in fighting Mecha sonic, who then blows up the island but not before losing the four chaos emeralds due to Sonic and Mario being invinicble thanks to a Starman being found. Shadow then teleports the entire Yoshi Tribe and the Heroes off the island before it is destroyed.

Plot[]

The story begins where Episode 5 left off. Wario and Waluigi arrive on Yoshi's Island by using Waluigi as a makeshift inner tube. After Wario pops Waluigi with a needle, Waluigi is sent flying around in a comedic manner as Wario begins to walk inland. Waluigi runs to catch up with Wario, only to bump into him before he pulls out a bag. Waluigi looks at the bag with anticipation, only for it to fall flat due to it being empty, much to his disappointment. The pair are surprised by the sound of an explosion, causing the two to notice the three-way battle ensuing further into the island.

The scene cuts to the battle, showing Mario and Luigi running from the Koopa Bros., who are chasing them while utilizing their special technique with the power of the Chaos Emerald. The brothers maneuver around the terrain as they run before Axem Red swoops in to attack Mario. Mario avoids the attack by jumping atop the Koopa Bros. and then blocks a follow-up attack from Axem Red with his hammer. Mario begins to counterattack with his hammer, battling Axem Red while Luigi continues to evade the Koopa Bros. and maneuver around the jungle terrain. However, the group runs into a rock face and begins freefalling off of a cliff. Luigi and Ninjakoopas Black, Yellow, and Green begin to plummet, while Mario kicks Axem Red away and begins to battle Ninjakoopa Red atop debris before they both crash into a cliffside.

Mario and Ninjakoopa Red drop their respective radars upon impact. The Emerald Radar Radar lands on a cliff in front of Wario and Waluigi, while the other falls further down in front of Sonic. Sonic picks it up, only to be confronted by the rest of the Koopa Bros. and Axem Black, Green, and Yellow. Both groups attack Sonic in hopes of taking the Radar for themselves, but are no match for Sonic, who evades them and begins to run away. However, Axem Black and Green pursue him and utilize a combination attack where they spin in tandem, resembling a giant saw blade. Sonic avoids them and a subsequent attack from the three Koopa Bros. before Shadow appears to assist Sonic. Shadow lures Axem Black and Green away as Sonic escapes up a mountain with the Emerald Radar. Now Axem Yellow appears above the mountain and unleashes a massive attack. Sonic manages to evade it, but dodges the attack, which causes the mountain to begin to crumble.

While in hiding, the Yoshi Chief bemoans the damage the battle is causing on the island. Professor E. Gadd reassures him that Mario and the others will save the island, though the Yoshi Chief clarifies that he worries that the island will be completely destroyed by the battle. Meanwhile, Luigi comes across a Question Mark Block and discovers a Blue Shell inside of it. Using it, Luigi transforms into his Shell Luigi form before using its defensive properties to endure an attack from Axem Pink before being rescued by Yoshi.

The battle continues until Axem Red fires the Breaker Beam while utilizing the Chaos Emerald's power, obliterating the three mountains that stood at the center of the island in the process. The heroes regroup, with Shadow explaining the situation for the group. The Yoshi Chief is distressed by the destruction the island has endured, only for Shadow to snap at him, claiming he should be grateful he and his tribe are still alive. As Sonic begins to reprimand him, the Yoshi Chief apologizes and agrees with Shadow's sentiment. The Yoshi Chief begins organizing an evacuation of his tribe to avoid being caught in the crossfire of the battle.

In response to the Axem Ranger's attack with the Breaker Beam, the Koopa Bros. begin to use their special attack. However, just as they begin charging it, Shadow senses Mecha Sonic approaching. Mecha Sonic arrives on the island soon after and charges towards the Koopa Bros. as they unleash their special technique. Mecha Sonic effortlessly knocks all of the Koopa Bros. unconscious and claims their Chaos Emerald. Immediately afterward, Mecha Sonic turns his attention toward the Blade, where Axem Red is charging another attack with the Breaker Beam. Axem Red unleashes the attack upon Mecha Sonic, who unfortunately blocks it with a force field and destroys the Blade in a single blow, claiming the Chaos Emerald that was connected to the Breaker Beam. Axem Red is sent crashing back down to the island's surface by the attack, where his teammates check up on him.

Mecha Sonic lands and sarcastically thanks Sonic for helping him find the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic claims he'll take the Chaos Emeralds from him, while Mecha Sonic taunts him in response. Using a scouter, Axem Red scans Mecha Sonic and proclaims that his power level is over 9,000 in an exaggerated fashion. Axem Red's dramatic reaction grabs Mecha Sonic's attention and the Axem Rangers X introduce themselves to him before commanding him to surrender the Chaos Emerald. When Mecha Sonic refuses, Axem Red orders Axem Yellow to attack him. However, after striking Mecha Sonic, Axem Yellow finds his axe split in two. Having grown impatient with the Axem Rangers X, Mecha Sonic harnesses the power of the four Chaos Emeralds in his possession and transforms into his Semi-Super form. Using the newfound power granted by this form, Mecha Sonic effortlessly obliterates the Axem Rangers, destroying them completely as they try to battle him, but are no match for the power of the mighty hedgehog.

The heroes are stunned by the Axem Ranger's destruction, except for Shadow, who claims that they won't be able to get in his way now when he battles Mecha Sonic. The heroes rush in to engage Mecha Sonic in battle, aside from Luigi who is paralyzed in fear. Mario attempts to coax Luigi into assisting in the battle, but is unsuccessful as Luigi retreats into his shell, much to Mario's irritation, as he snarls angrily at his brother. Meanwhile, Sonic, Shadow, and Yoshi battle Mecha Sonic, but are completely outmatched. Just as Mecha Sonic is about to finish Sonic off with an energy blast, Mario shoots Mecha Sonic with a fireball as he rides into battle atop of Luigi, who is tucked inside his Blue Shell to keep safe from getting injured. As Mario battles Mecha Sonic, Mecha Sonic kicks away one of Mario's fireballs, which ends up landing Wario, causing him and Waluigi to accidentally run off of a cliff and fall into the sea.

The heroes continue to battle Mecha Sonic, but are completely outmatched, and are effortlessly defeated, even being no match for Mecha Sonic's brillaint powers. The heroes are scattered away by Mecha Sonic's attacks, while Sonic confronts his doppelganger alone. Mecha Sonic laughs at him, claiming that despite toying with them the entire time during their battle, he has them on the ropes. Refusing to give up, Sonic proclaims that the battle isn't over yet. Mecha Sonic scoffs at him and tells him that their battle ended on Mobius and that they had merely delayed the inevitable by warping the Chaos Emeralds to the Mushroom Kingdom. Mecha Sonic states that this will be their last meeting as he begins preparing a massive energy ball, intending to destroy the island along with Sonic and his companions, much to Sonic's horror.

Having recovered from the battle, Luigi screams in horror at the sight of the massive energy ball and pleads for an unconscious Mario to wake up. In his panic, Luigi remembers a flashback of the 1-Up Mushroom that Princess Peach had given him before he departed for the island. He uses it to revive Mario and alerts him of the energy ball that looms over them. Mario notices a Question Mark Block atop a nearby cliff. With Luigi's assistance, he reaches it and finds a Starman within it. After shortly pondering what to do with it, Mario comes up with a plan and the brothers hurry to rejoin the rest of their party.

Meanwhile, Sonic, Shadow, and Yoshi meet with the Yoshi Chief and Professor E. Gadd. The Yoshi Chief informs them that they had only just managed to round up the entire Yoshi Tribe and that he doubts they'll be able to escape before the island is destroyed. As Sonic suggests using Shadow's ability to use Chaos Control to escape, Shadow explains that without an emerald's power, his use of Chaos Control is limited to a short distance. Mario and Luigi reunite with the group, much to Sonic's relief.

Mario asks Sonic to use the Starman he had found with him. Sonic questions what it does, only for Shadow to snap at him and tell him to just do what he says, to which Sonic concedes. The pair use its power and transform into Invincible Mario and Super Sonic respectively. Using these new forms, they fly up towards Mecha Sonic in a last ditch effort to stop him. Attacking together, they manage to knock the Chaos Emeralds out of Mecha Sonic's grasp, reverting him to his base form. Sonic quickly collects the four emeralds and begins charging an energy attack to destroy Mecha Sonic. However before he can use the attack, the energy he gained from the Starman runs out, causing the attack to dissipate and for him to begin plummeting back to the island. Enraged, Mecha Sonic slams the energy ball down in an attempt to destroy Sonic and his companions. Sonic tosses one of the Chaos Emeralds to Shadow while still airborne. Shadow catches it and uses it to amplify his power of Chaos Control to warp everyone off of Yoshi's Island right before it's destroyed. The Koopa Bros. are shown to still be unconscious as the energy ball collides with the island, obliterating it. Mecha Sonic hovers over the island, silently gazing at the destruction he caused.

The heroes, Professor E. Gadd, and the Yoshi Tribe are warped to the coast of the mainland. Mario's attention is drawn towards the Yoshi Chief and Thunderfoot, who mournfully gaze towards the smoldering remains of their home. The Chief asks that Mario continue fighting to stop Mecha Sonic, telling him to never give up, no matter how bleak the odds may look. Later, the Yoshi Chief sets out with his tribe to begin searching for a new home, while Professor E. Gadd decides to retire to his laboratory, while the heroes set out to search for the remaining emeralds. Before departing for his lab, Professor E. Gadd asks Mario to return his Emerald Radar Radar for safekeeping. Upon checking, Mario discovers that he had lost it. Meanwhile, Wario is seen far out to sea, while using Waluigi as a makeshift inner tube once again. Wario pulls out the Emerald Radar Radar and laughs to himself.

The infamous line as it appears in the comic issue.

The line "I'll crush you", said audibly by Mecha Sonic, would be referenced in an official capacity in Sonic the Hedgehog: Scrapnik Island Issue 4 by IDW Publishing.[1] This was later confirmed to be intentional on the part of the comic's writer, Daniel Barnes.[2]

Trivia[]

  • This episode marks the first episode that Mark Haynes managed to bypass the 16K limit.
  • The title of the episode is based on the title of the Dragon Ball Z episode, "Duel on a Vanishing Planet". [3]
  • Mecha Sonic's dynamic entry on Yoshi's Island appears to be influenced by Cooler's Final Combination attack from Dragon Ball Z - Cooler's Revenge. [4]
  • Mecha Sonic was given Cooler's dialogue from Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi, replacing his previous sound effects from Sektor and Cyrax from Mortal Kombat.
    • Mecha Sonic's first line upon assuming his Semi-Super state was taken directly from Garland in Dissidia: Final Fantasy. Coincidentally, Garland's English voice actor, Christopher Sabat, voiced various characters in Dragon Ball Z, most notably Vegeta and Piccolo.
  • Axem Red's "IT'S OVER 9000!" line was taken from the Saban dub of Dragon Ball Z. The line was originally spoken by Vegeta, voiced by Brian Drummond.
  • Mecha Sonic likening himself to a god is based on a line from Dragon Ball Z - The Legendary Super Saiyan, where the main antagonist, Broly, likens himself to a devil.
  • Yoshi's sprites were changed to his sprites from Yoshi's Island DS.
  • Wario's sprite were changed from his Wario Land 4 sprites to custom-made sprites based on the visual style of Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.
  • This is the first episode in which Sonic uses a power-up from the Super Mario series.
  • The move Mecha Sonic uses to defeat Axem Red after shrugging off his cannon is a reference to the Shun Goku Satsu, AKA Raging Demon combo from the Street Fighter franchise, in particular Akuma's version of the technique due to Mecha Sonic standing with his back facing the screen upon completion.
  • Mark has stated that he dislikes the ending where Mario and sonic use a star to defeat Mecha Sonic at the last moment. Stating that he describes it as being a "Deus Ex Machina" moment.[5]

Goofs[]

  • The Radars dropped by Mario and Red Ninjakoopa are not the same ones picked up by Sonic and Wario respectively.
    • The radar dropped by Mario, the Radar Radar, falls to the ground, where Sonic stops by it.
    • The radar dropped by Red Ninjakoopa, the Emerald Radar, falls onto the cliff.
